40TH ZAMAMI YACHT RACE: June 24, 8:25 a.m.-4 p.m.; 28-mile yacht race from Ginowan Port marina to Zamami Port; 40-minute ride from Naha Airport; 098-987-2320. 
18TH SABANI SAILING RACE: July 1 & 2; sabani (local small-sized boats) are one of Okinawa’s traditions and race 22 miles from Furuzamami Beach on Zamami Island to Naha Port; 098-987-2277; www.vill.zamami.okinawa.jp.e.gz.hp.transer.com/news/2017/04/post-165.html.
KADENA HARII DRAGON BOAT RACE: July 2, 10 a.m.; the tradition of the harii is linked to the Kaijin-sai (Unjami), or Fisherman Festival, observed to give thanks to the sea god and pray for the safety and prosperity of fishermen. The races are held in fishing communities throughout Okinawa in late spring and summer; Kadena Fisher Pier, 15-minute ride from Mihama American Village; 10,000 yen for one team entry; 098-956-6222.

28TH INTERNATIONAL BILLFISH TOURNAMENT - YONAGUNIJIMA: July 7, 3-9 p.m., July 8-9, 7 a.m.-9 p.m.; Billfish derby by trolling, along with surf-fishing derby in the sea near Yonagunijima and the shore; Yonagunijima, extreme western-tip island of Japan while viewing Taiwain Islands over the ocean; one-hour and a half flight from Naha Airport; 098-87-2241.
TOUR DE MIYAKOJIMA BICYCLE RACE 2017: July 8 & 9; cycling event featuring touring events of 71.25 miles & 51.87 miles Saturday and 115 & 71.25-mile races Sunday; Miyako Island; 0467-84-8639.

39TH NAGO HARII DRAGON BOAT RACE: Aug. 6, 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m.; The dragon boat races are held in fishing communities on Okinawa in late spring and summer. Nago is known as the biggest harii event and more than 180 teams participate at Nago Fishing “Pier”; 3-9, Shiro, 90-minute ride from Naha Airport; 098-53-7755.
