Massive tug-of-war to draw thousands
By Stripes Okinawa
Get ready for the world’s biggest tug-of-war in Kumoji, Naha City. The 39th Naha Festival runs Oct. 10 to 12 with the tug-of-war slated for Oct. 11.
The 39th Naha Great Tug-of-War is expected to draw 15,000 +participants to battle it out with a more than 600-foot-long, 44-ton rope. Wooden pegs are inserted through the nearly 4 ½-foot-diameter rope, allowing anyone who wishes to participate in what has been a Guinness World Record-holding event.
The massive competition is to take place at Kumoji Crossing along Route 58 which will be cleared and have its divider removed for the event. The tug-of-war is free of charge and everyone is encouraged to join in.
The traditional meet is said to date back to the 1600s during the Ryukyus Kingdom. Tradition holds that taking a piece of the rice-straw rope home brings good luck.
Past festivals have also included a parade, traditional dancers and other festivities. For more information on the 39th Naha Festival, visit <www.ocvb.or.jp/card/en/0600001264.html> or call 098-866-4858.
