The 2016 DODEA Okinawa District Science Fair was held on April 29th at the Foster Field House.  Winners of school science fairs participated in the district fair for the chance to win overall for their grade level.  This year, several military branches were in attendance to share their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Careers with the students.  Just a few among them were the Third Marine Division from Camp Courtney, MACG-18 Division from Camp Futenma, US Naval Hospital, the US Army’s 10th Support Group, and the US Air Force Electrical Systems from Kadena Air Base.  Additionally, Softbank’s robot, Pepper, and its crew, as well as other local volunteers, entertained and educated students and family members.  Students’ science fair projects were prejudged by military volunteers on April 28th at the Schilling Community Center.  Additional military and civilian volunteers helped judge students’ oral presentations the next day at the fair.

This year, students from Kadena Middle School and Kubasaki High competed in various exciting STEM Challenges.  These STEM events included the construction and testing of bridges, target launchers, Rube Goldberg machines and robotic arms.  Kadena Middle School students were also able to showcase their SeaPerch underwater robotic units at Camp Foster’s 50 meter Pool.  Students, parents and chaperones rotated throughout the day to enjoy all the exhibits and competitions during the fair.  The science fair closed with an awards ceremony to acknowledge and applaud the students who had placed first, second and third overall for their grade level.  Congratulations to the winners of this year’s Okinawa District Science Fair and to all that participated.
