Pacific Okinawa Players Performs Youth Musical “Willy Wonka Jr"
“Come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination.” The opening lines to Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR.; presented by Pacific Okinawa Players (POPs), the only community theatre organization on island committed to providing quality live theatre experiences for all SOFA members, both onstage and off. Join us at the Community Center Theatre on Camp Foster as our young performers bring to life one of Roald Dahl’s most beloved stories.
Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR. is the story of Charlie Bucket and all your favorite “Golden Ticket” winners and songs that you remember from the 1971 film featuring Gene Wilder, rest in peace. In addition to strolling down memory lane you’ll be surprised and delighted by some of the updates provided by the playwrights and composers: Leslie Bricusse, Timothy Allen-McDonald, and Anthony Newley.
The plot is familiar to most: Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka JR. follows enigmatic candy man, Willy Wonka, as he holds a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his world-famous candy bars. Whomever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are the brats you love to hate, but the fifth is a sweet child named Charlie Bucket, who takes the tour in the company of her equally affable grandfather. The children must learn to follow Mr. Wonka's rules in the factory – or suffer the consequences and the Oompa Loompas.
This production is led by POPs’ Artistic Director and the seasoned Youth Musical Director, Christine Smith.
