The Get’em Kicks Shooting Stars 2018, a basketball team composed of 12 boys and 15 girls from Kadena and Kubasaki High Schools and several on-base middle schools, is scheduled to play against a local high school team Sept. 15.
Two games are scheduled at Risner Gym on Kadena Air Base, starting at 9 a.m. From Oroku High school in Naha city, 35 players will participate in the friendly matches.
Thanks to efforts by Coach Johnny Cooper, Elonzo Higginson, Jim Vergara, and Ryan Torres, the Stars play local Japanese teams on a regular basis. But these upcoming games are going to be something special.
“We have two games a month, but this will be our first time to invite local kids on base. We are very excited,” said Coach Cooper.
Basketball is one of the most popular sports on Okinawa. Many fans flock to arenas to passionately cheer for the Ryukyu Golden Kings, a pro team based in the prefecture. And many kids play for their school or club teams.
Coach Cooper noted that the games are not only for the young players of the Get’em Kicks Shooting Stars to develop their games, but also to enjoy a cultural exchange through basketball.
Come to the Risner Gym and support the young athletes/ambassadors.
