The mongoose was brought to Okinawa in 1910 by a zoologist under the assumption that the animal would drive out venomous habu snake. One theory says that the zoologist got the idea when he saw a duel between a mongoose and a cobra snake in India. However, it turned out the mammals caused more harm than good by attacking other creatures such as birds. Now, the mammal is considered a threat to the islands’ ecosystem.
