Former lifeguard sentenced for sex assault of Kadena classmate
CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A former Kadena High School student who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a heavily intoxicated classmate in front of other students and recording it on his cellphone was sentenced Friday to five years in prison.
Ricky Isiah Sherwood was 18 at the time of the Feb. 11, 2014, incident. He entered into a plea agreement on Nov. 14 in federal court.
The incident occurred at the Kadena Air Base home of his legal guardian and uncle, a Marine Corps staff sergeant, and came to investigators’ attention after the disoriented 17-year-old victim was spotted by counselors at an on-base park. The girl said she had no recollection of events after a second cup of alcohol and was taken to the U.S. Naval Hospital on nearby Camp Foster for evaluation.
Sherwood, a base lifeguard at the time, produced a cellphone video of the incident. The Minnesota native admitted he provided alcohol to those present and had sex with the girl, who appeared to be in distress during the encounter and was unable to stand, walk or dress herself afterward.
