Hello military community,

In preparation of tax time; I would like to share with you a resource to assist you and your family with filing your taxes. I am sure most of you are aware or in passing have heard of this resource but I would still like to go over the basics.

Military OneSource provides FREE access to the H&R Block At Home Basic online tax filing service ( The service allows you to complete and electronically file your federal tax return and up to three state tax returns OR filings. Your calculations are guaranteed to be 100 percent accurate or H&R Block pays the penalties and interest.

The H&R Block At Home Basic tax filing service protects the security and confidentiality of your personal information by using industry-recognized security safeguards. You do not have to complete the return all at one time. When you begin, you create a secure user ID and password, which enables you to log on, save, close and return to the program as needed.

A few tips for the newbies to make tax time easier: Make sure you gather all the necessary documents and information you will need ahead of time. Things like Social Security number and date of birth for you, your spouse and dependents; childcare, education and adoption costs; W-2 forms from all employers for you and your spouse; Form 1099 for independent contractors; investment income forms; and alimony information.

Also include Social Security benefits, miscellaneous income, Form 1098-E for student loan interest, charitable donations, uninsured medical and dental expenses, real estate taxes and receipts for any deductible expense (military, home business, etc.).

If you have any questions regarding filing your taxes and what you can claim, make sure to contact your local accounting department. They are always willing to answer questions. For those families who are new to a base, check with your family assistance coordinator office for guidance on finding an accountant.

Best wishes and Blessing for the New Year!
