Guam USO named beneficiary of the 3rd Guam International Marathon

(Tumon, Guam) – Thursday, March 05, 2015 – The Guam Visitors Bureau, along with Pacific Islands Club Guam and United Airlines, announced their support of the Guam USO as a beneficiary of the third annual Guam International Marathon. The Guam USO will now join the Islandwide Beautification Task Force and the Tourism Education Council as beneficiaries for this emerging event. The third annual Guam International Marathon will take place on Sunday, April 12, 2015.

New features for the 2015 Guam International Marathon include the introduction of a new fiesta aid station that will feature runner-friendly local food favorites from throughout Guam to be presented in an on-course mini ”fiesta”. This year’s event will also see an increase in on-course entertainment provided by many of Guam’s favorite local music groups, as well as additional cheering squads and aid stations.

According to Event Director, Ben Ferguson, the planning process for the event is in full swing and the USO has played an instrumental role in promoting the event to Guam’s military community. “It is a great honor for the Guam International Marathon to work collaboratively with the USO as an event beneficiary. The USO does an incredible job in their support of our military community and it is with tremendous pride that the Guam International Marathon can be a part of their mission.” Ferguson continued, “We want to encourage everyone that calls Guam home, to come out and register for the 5k, 10k, half or full marathon. I am thrilled to see the entire community really come together in their support of the event. This support is really what makes the event special and is why we coined the event slogan, ‘More than a Run, a Håfa Adai Experience’.”

“The Guam USO is proud to be named a beneficiary of the 3rd Guam International Marathon,” said Leigh Leilani Graham, USO Area Director for Hawaii and Guam. “The marathon is an exciting competition and provides a fantastic an opportunity to make new friends and enhance the relationships between our military and local communities. The USO mission is ‘to lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families’, and we are thankful to all involved for the support of USO’s mission. We encourage all military and local families to participate in this year’s Guam International Marathon.”

For the first two years of the event, the Guam USO has been instrumental in assisting with providing a cadre of volunteers to support water stops along the race course. Guam USO also assisted with distributing important event information to military personnel and dependents. Event organizers expect an increase of registrants and volunteers this year with the help of the Guam USO.

This Guam International Marathon event includes 5K, 10K, Half Marathon (13.1 miles) and Marathon (26.2 miles) race distances. All courses have been officially certified by the IAAF (International Association of Athletic Federations) and AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races). This designation means that marathon runners may use this as a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon.
