Sushi bar a hit with military community
When you want to enjoy sushi and other Japanese and local Okinawan dishes at a reasonable price, Sushi Bar Kamisushi is a good option.
Located in Mihama Village near Camp Foster, Camp Lester and Kadena Air Base, Kamisushi is a very popular eatery among U.S. service members stationed on Okinawa. In fact, more than 80 percent of the customers are Americans, according to the restaurant owner Isamu Kamiya.
“Although most of our customers are Americans, we keep offering authentic Japanese dishes rather than making them Americanized by applying countless seasonings and flavors,” Kamiya said.
Kamisushi offers a wide-range of Japanese dishes and Kamiya said it doesn’t skimp on the portions. Its menu items include various sushi (both traditional hand-shaped sushi and sushi rolls), tempura, sashimi (raw fish) and Okinawan dishes, such as champuru (Okinawan stir fry dish), rafutee (stewed pork belly) and local noodles.
To enjoy a variety of dishes at a low cost, Kamiyo recommended visiting during lunch time (11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.) and ordering the Lunch Set for 980 yen ($8). The set contains four hand-shaped sushi, four sushi rolls, along with tempura, salad, miso soup with yushi-dofu (local beans curd) and dessert.
“I am confident that the variation of dishes, the large portions and inexpensive price of the lunch set will satisfy any customer,” Kamiya said.
The Mihama Roll Set for 1,300 yen ($11) will give you a chance to appreciate the restaurant’s unique variation of sushi rolls - salmon, tuna and shrimp tempura – all topped with umibudo, which literally means “sea grape” and is a local seaweed, according to Kamiya.
The restaurant is also a great place to enjoy adult beverages after work, as it boasts of variations of local craft beers, cocktails and awamori (local distilled liquor). These beverages go along nicely with side dishes of spicy hot tempura and sushi sand, according to Kamiya.
Kamisushi has a cozy, western-style interior and can seat 50 customers.
Drop by Kamisushi to order the lunch set or stop by in the evening to enjoy a night with friends. You’ll see why this place is so popular with the military community.
