Name: Hector L. Matos
Location: Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan
Occupation: Financial Technician, USMC, MOS 3432
When did you first begin volunteering with the USO?
June 24, 2014
How did you hear about us and what made you want to get involved with the USO?
I heard about the USO during a brief held with JRC during a week of classes. I was told that Foster was getting a new USO building that was not officially open yet and that volunteers were need to help out the staff move furniture and food items to the new building. I got involved because the whole idea of being apart of a center that was not fully open and watch it develop to a functioning center really caught my attention. Also LOA’s were given to volunteer’s who reach 10 hours so that was also positive incentive to be involved.
How has your experience been so far?
So far my experience with the USO has been outstanding. I have over 190 hours logged and there is never a dull moment with the other volunteers, service members, and staff. I see myself constantly volunteering with the USO until my tour here in Okinawa is done and look forward on seeing what all I can accomplish.
What have you found as your greatest strength as a volunteer?
My greatest strength as a volunteer is the positive energy i bring to the USO community and being able to knock out projects as task the staff may need me to accomplish.
What keeps you coming back?
The reason I come back to the USO is seeing all the hard work of volunteering pay off. In the beginning the new building was just an empty space waiting to be filled. After hours of volunteering the space was not only filled will furniture and gaming systems but also with service members and memories of good times shared between volunteers, staff, and our troops. These are the reasons why I enjoy volunteering and keeps my motivation because I'm apart of something bigger than just myself. I'm apart of a selfless organization looking out for the well being of others.
