(Killer) Platoon Sergeant Jeremiah C. Johnson
Name: Jeremiah C. Johnson
Location: Camp Hansen
Occupation: (Killer) Platoon Sergeant
When did you first begin volunteering with the USO? Iraq in 2004.
How did you hear about us and what made you want to get involved with the USO? On my first combat deployment to Iraq we flew out of March Air Force base and the USO staff/volunteers we there to see us off and made us feel as if we were at home and they made sure that we were supported.
How has your experience been so far? Outstanding.
What have you found as your greatest strength as a volunteer? The ability to make suggestions and then see them go into action. Knowing that the USO is here for us and will change and cater to our likes and dislikes.
What keeps you coming back? It’s a place that promotes a healthy life style and is a great atmosphere. You don’t need to have any money when you arrive, nor do you have to worry about the smoking and drinking environment. It’s a great place to relax and have a good time without spending money. As a volunteer it gives me to opportunity to give back. As a troop we could not do things that we do overseas without the support of family, loved ones and places like the USO that let us know that we are supported no matter what is going on in the news.
Do you have an inspiration story you can briefly tell me about? The opportunity to give back to those that give their all. I recall a lady named Mary that was at MAFB when I left for my deployment to Iraq. We had a conversation prior to me boarding and I received a hug from her and she told me that another would be waiting upon my return. Seven months later there she was back on the flight line and was looking for me. I was amazed that of the thousands of people she had seen come and go that she remember me and the conversation we had.
Fun Fact about yourself: Love to live life to the fullest and be an inspiration to my wife, kids, and Marines. I have always been known to bring humor to any situation.
