28th Annual Kinser Half Marathon aboard Camp Kinser
CAMP KINSER, Okinawa -- The 13.1-mile run brought the local and military communities together for a friendly competition. The course took runners along the interior of the base, starting and finishing at the Kinser Fitness Center.
“I think the main importance is that the local and military communities can form a relationship,” said Harold Brown, a sports coordinator with Marine Corps Community Services Semper Fit. “When you can get everyone together to have a good time, I think it means a lot.”
As runners passed, friends and family members along the streets encouraged them saying, “Keep going, you’re almost there!”
“I love running to push myself past that mental limit,” said Capt. Angela Youmans, an aircraft maintenance officer with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 1, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “I’ve learned that even when my body’s tired, the mind can take you a couple steps further.”
A variety of runners came out to participate in the MCCS event. The race attracted runners of all experience levels. A father pushed his son, while another participant chose to wear a costume the entirety of the race.
“It’s a good feeling to see people run across the finish line,” said Ashley Thomas, a volunteer passing out water to the runners. “To see their faces expressing accomplishment, knowing they have completed a goal, I just want to keep that encouragement going.”
Medals were awarded to the top three runners in each age group, while all participants were able to celebrate their accomplishment together with delicious food and refreshing drinks.
“I felt there was a bond with all the support from the local and military communities coming out to Kinser,” said Youmans. “I’m looking forward to doing more MCCS events and continuing to build relationships in the future.”
