Camp Courtney Holiday Festival 2018
Camp Courtney, OKINAWA, Japan— U.S. service members and their families attended Camp Courtney Christmas and Holiday Festival at Camp Courtney, Okinawa, Japan December 8, 2018.
The event, also known as "Courtney Fest," provided entertainment and activities for service members and families stationed on Okinawa, so they don’t feel so far away from home during the holiday season.
“While we’re in Okinawa, it’s nice to have these events closeby,” said Cpl. Jewel Edmonds, an embarkation specialist with Combat Logistics Regiment-3, 3rd Marine Logistics Group. “It reminds me of the holidays I spent as a child, with all of the food and fun activities going on. All that’s missing is my family, but at least I have a good support system out here.”
Not only does the festival attract the U.S service members and their families, but all the residents of Okinawa, as the event was open to locals.
Carnival rides and games were offered to festival-goers to enjoy, and even an assortment of foods.
“This is truly an awesome way of exchanging cultural differences between two nations,” said Tegumi Oshiro, a retail worker and resident of Chatan, Okinawa. “It allows us to meet face-to-face, instead of just reading the papers or seeing social media posts. We meet real people and get to make those connections with them.”
The finale of the festival was a performance by country superstar, Randy Houser. Guests gathered around the stage to listen to the live music before leaving Courtney Fest.
