Camp Foster Family donates Exchange Sweepstakes Prize to local charity
CAMP FOSTER – A family lunch after church became an opportunity for military spouse Rosie McDonald to pay it forward. But it almost didn’t happen.
While enjoying a meal at the Camp Foster Subway, McDonald was surprised to discover that her large soft drink made her one of 50 $1,000-gift-card winners in the Subway Sip.Rip.Win peel-off game.
“I was about to toss my soda cup when my son noticed the sticker,” McDonald said. “I peeled it off and read, ‘Winner! $1000!’”
McDonald’s husband, Lt. Daniel McDonald, serves in the Civil Engineering Corps of the United States Navy and has been stationed in Okinawa since June 2016. While overseas, the Exchange has been a lifeline for the McDonalds and their three young children.
“We love to experience everything about the local culture, but sometimes you need a dose of the familiar,” McDonald said. “We are very grateful for all the services the Exchange provides.”
The family decided to give back to the local community by donating their prize to HelpOki, a nonprofit organization founded by a retired Marine that provides support to the less fortunate in Okinawa.
“We first became aware of HelpOki last year when the local food pantries were experiencing a terrible shortage,” McDonald said. “It was so heartwarming to see so many service members stationed here rally around and collect food for these pantries through efforts organized by HelpOki. We trust that the leadership at HelpOki will find the best way to put this money to use.”
Exchange shoppers have a chance to win more than 75,000 prizes worth more than $532,000 in the OCONUS Subway giveaway, including shopping sprees, Exchange gift cards and thousands of instant-win Subway food prizes. All prize claims must be received at exchangesubwaypromos.com by May 20.
