Ever visited one of the many department store food basements around Japan? The first of its kind was introduced about 80 years ago in Nagoya. A combination of “depato,” meaning department store, and “chika.” meaning basement, the word “depachika” was reportedly first used to describe these food basements in 2000 when Tokyu Department Store opened its own and some newspapers and TV programs used the name.
