Yomitan is the largest village in Japan. In 2014, Yomitan Village became the biggest when Takizawa village in Iwate prefecture upgraded its municipality status from Village to city. The host municipality of Torii Station retains the title with a population of 41,283 as of March. The two municipalities held a ceremony to commemorate the passing of the baton in February of 2014.
