KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- This June is Kadena's 2nd annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Pride Month and multiple organizations are going to be holding an array of events in support.

There is an LGBT Pride committee sponsored multi-colored awareness ribbon on the hill just after Gate 1 on Douglas Boulevard for the month. There will also be an educational display at The Exchange until June 6. Additionally there will be a luncheon with a special guest speaker at the Officer's Club June 27 that will wrap up the month.

LGBT Pride is hosting a 5k fundraiser event June 17 at 6 a.m. starting at the Risner Fitness Center.

Tech. Sgt. Brandyshay Winfrey, 18th Component Maintenance Squadron section chief and a member of the LGBT committee, said LGBT Pride hopes to create an open dialogue between supervisors and their troops.

"It gives people who felt like they couldn't before, an opportunity to come out and be honest with who they are," Winfrey said. "It shows them that this is accepted and there are a lot of sources that can help with that process."

Airman 1st Class Steven Anderson, 18th Communications Squadron cable and antenna systems technician and a member of the LGBT Pride committee, believes it is important to the LGBT Pride Committee that fellow service members are reminded what is truly important.

"It doesn't matter what I do in my personal life or who I spend that time with," Anderson said. "We are all brothers and sisters serving in the profession of arms."
