CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A Marine Corps spouse has started a crowdfunding campaign to help rebuild and restore a UNESCO World Heritage site on Okinawa severely damaged by fire last week.

Shuri Castle, rebuilt in 1992 following its destruction in World War II, was reported ablaze at 2:21 a.m. Wednesday. It took 171 firefighters more than 11 hours to extinguish the fire, and several buildings, including the castle’s main hall, called Seiden, were destroyed.

On the day of the blaze, Mari Gregory, 40 — wife of Maj. Indigo Gregory, 43 — started a GoFundMe campaign titled “Shuri Castle devastation aid” that as of Monday had raised nearly $5,000 of its $100,000 goal.

“I felt the desire to help and want to do something for this devastation being felt all over Okinawa,” she told Stars and Stripes in an email Monday.
