VIDEO| Speakin’ Japanese lesson: May I take photos here?

When we go on a trip, we would take a lot of photos to share with friends and family on social media. However, some locations prohibit visitors from taking photos. When you are not sure if it’s OK to take photos at a certain location, let’s try this phrase:

“Koko de shasin wo totte mo iidesuka?” which means “Can/May I take photos here?”

(“koko” – here, “de” - a postpositional particle to indicate a location or a time, “shasin” – photo, “wo” - a postpositional particle to indicate an object, “totte/toru” – take, “temo” – a phrase to indicate a proposition or a hypothesis, “iidesuka?” – is ～OK?

Likewise, if you want to take a photo of or with someone, you can ask him or her, “Anata no shasin wo tottemo iidesuka (Can I take a photo of you?)” or “Anata to shasin wo tottemo iidesuka Can I take a photo with you?”
