7 ways to raise healthy kids

Raising kids is a full-time job. After all, they depend on us for everything, ranging from their emotions to every other need. However, it is imperative to take care of your kids without surrendering to their every whim and caprice. For example, you will have to make sure they eat healthy food and not just order shakes and pizza for every meal in order to provide a healthy diet. Check out a few ways through which you can raise healthy kids:

1. Become a good example.

Children, especially very young children, learn by emulating their elders. This holds particularly true for their parents. This is why it is very important for the parents to become great examples for their children. You will be their ultimate role model, and only you can help them to understand the important things in life—from the important ones to the trivial ones— they will follow your lead. You cannot force them to eat their greens if you are gorging yourself on fries and fried chicken. At the same time, you can’t make them exercise if you are not willing to join them.

2. Teach them the importance of discipline.

Kids have to be taught self-control, otherwise, they might end up becoming selfish. If there is ice cream in the house, they will all want to share it. If one of the kids wants to binge and the others throw a tantrum and you succumb to the pressure, they will continue to do this, and eat whatever they want, whenever they want. It is up to you to show them what portion control is all about, and how and why they should exercise moderation in everything.

3. Make sure they are always part of the decision-making process.

Kids learn a whole lot better about everything if they believe that their opinions count for something. Children might be reluctant to follow a rigid regime if they have no say in it. If you want them to adhere to the eating and exercise schedule, ask them to give their input. They will be more willing to follow the menu and the program that they have devised themselves.

4. Let them into the kitchen.

You should allow them to cook a little, every now and then. Of course, it has to be done under supervision and you will have to make sure that they are not exposed to knives and other dangerous items. At the same time, they have to be kept well away from the stove and/or oven. However, within mutually acceptable limits, allow them to help you so that they will take pride and eat their own culinary creations.

5. Help them devise an exercise program.

Exercise should always be a vital part of their daily routine. Help them devise a routine that they would like to follow. If a kid likes to use a bike, get him a bike instead of forcing him to run. If they are into baseball, don’t force them to play basketball.

6. Limit their screen time.

This is one of the most important things you can do to keep your kids safe and healthy. They should never be allowed unrestrained and unrestricted access to the internet. Moreover, excessive screen time on a smartphone, TV or even a laptop can make them neglect their other chores and duties as well as their exercise routine. This is why you should make sure that their screen time is always tightly regulated,

7. Make sure they get all their vitamins

Kids have growing bodies that require a lot of energy. Sometimes, simple everyday food items may not be enough. In this case, you may use vitamins to make sure that your kids have all the vitamins and minerals they need. Sometimes, a lack of a vital nutrient can also affect their mood.
