Girl Scouts on Okinawa gear up for cookie season

Brownie Troop 04

Get ready for your favorite Girl Scout cookies hitting the booths around base starting Feb. 7.

The Girl Scouts of Camp Courtney received their shipment of 602 cases of cookies on Jan. 22, have sorted and distributed them to the local troops ahead of the start of cookie sale season.

There’ll be your standard favorites like Samoas and Thin Mints, and new this year – Lemon-Ups— are replacing Savannah Smiles. The crisp, lemon cookies, are baked with eight different messages inspired by Girl Scout entrepreneurs like: “I am an innovator”, “I am a goalgetter” and more. Cookies cost $5 per box and $6 for specialty cookies like Toffee-tastics and Smores. In addition, the girls are also collecting donation cookies for troops overseas and for local organizations.

Beyond bringing troops and their families a taste of home on Okinawa, the cookie sales serve as an important lesson for scouts who learn five skills including: Goal Setting, Decision Making, Money Management, People Skills and Business Ethics. Beyond the cookie sales, the scouts are also planning on how their hard-earned money will be spent, so don’t forget to ask your local girl scout what the troop’s goal is for the year.

Look out for your favorite Girl Scout or for troops selling at designated locations around Camp Courtney, Kadena and Camp Foster. The Courtney Girl Scouts will also have booths at the Hansen and Camp Schwab PX, giving Marines and military personnel at those installations a chance to pick up a few boxes. Sales run through to March 22 or until the cookies sell out, so don’t miss out on this year’s Girl Scout cookie sales!
