Navy may reimburse some sailors for GED, college prep testing
NORFOLK, Va. (Tribune News Service) — Sailors taking high school equivalency or college placement exams off base may be eligible for reimbursement as part of the Navy’s larger plan to shutter its stateside on-base college offices.
Tests eligible for reimbursement include the General Educational Development exam – or GED – general and subject-area GRE graduate school entry exams, the GMAT exam for graduate business programs and Praxis exams for teacher certification. Sailors also are eligible to take the SAT and ACT college entrance exams twice for reimbursement during their career , according to the Navy.
The move to off-base testing and reimbursement aligns with the service’s plans to shutter 20 Navy College Offices across the country beginning this year, said Lt. Cmdr. Katherine Meadows, Navy Education and Training Command spokeswoman. The offices link sailors with college degree and technical programs and provide counseling, education planning, testing, tuition assistance and other benefits. The Navy administered 577 SAT and a little more than 1,000 ACT exams stateside during fiscal 2015, Meadows said.
Most of the 20 offices, including one at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, are slated to close beginning Oct. 1, though the Navy has said its Norfolk Naval Station office will remain open through September 2017.
On-base testing will be available until the offices close, Meadows said, though she recommended that sailors check to confirm closure dates with their base offices. Sailors who took off-base tests after July 1 may be eligible for the reimbursement through Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support.
