Get you some tasty food at Okinawa's Sama Sama

It was a late Sunday night and I wasn’t looking forward to finishing an awesome weekend without an exciting dinner. This place was brought to my attention by my lovely date. She had heard about this place from a friend who had previously eaten here and enjoyed their style of food.

We arrived just before last order which was around roughly 9 or 10 o’clock and were greeted outside the small door by our server. There was a mix of local and foreign guests, but the whole restaurant was not too busy and very quiet (besides the background music of course). We were quickly seated at a table of our choice and presented with a large colorful menu.

The style of food is “Bali” Indonesian, which has a lot of grilled dishes which are seasoned spicy or sweet (especially peanut flavor). They also have a special dessert menu and drink menu, plus an extensive set of choices designed for kids.

Most dishes or appetizers are priced around 400 to 1,000 yen, so we ordered four dishes and shared food. Each dish looked like a work of art when it was served and tasted better than we had imagined.

They also have a lunch menu that is priced reasonably and serves a buffet-style line-up. We spoke with the staff after enjoying the food and learned that the place is somewhat new, but attracts a lot of business. They occasionally have live music and can be reserved in advance for large venues.

They are very family-friendly as well. A special play area for kids is set up inside, equipped with toys and small tables.

Directions: From Kadena Gate 1, drive south on highway 58 (which means make a left if you are new). Drive to Chatan Intersection (the corner of Camp Foster where Route 130 & Highway 58 meet) and turn right at the light, then immediately make the first left. After passing the Marushin Pachinko building, cross the tiny bridge and turn right. Drive about 100 meters down this narrow road and Sama Sama appears on your left. If you use Google street view, they bought out the “Kona Garden Restaurant & Bar”
building.
