For Japanese, rice is a part of every good meal. And sometimes, they’ve become creative in serving up special dishes can include rice. Taco rice, one of Okinawans’ favorite fast foods for the past 30 years, is a fine example. And Okinawans and the military community can’t seem to get enough the Mex-Oki delicacy.

RuLers TACORiCE, located Ginowan-shi and a five-minute drive Futenma Air Base’s Gate 2, has thrown its hat into the taco rice ring.

The restaurant, which opened in June, offers various versions and sizes of taco rice. The most popular are Cheese Taco Rice (340 yen), Avocado Cheese Taco Rice (420 yen) and BBQ Taco Rice (380 yen), according to restaurant manager Tomoaki Ameku.

Each bowl includes seasoned ground beef, crisp lettuce and shredded cheese on the top of the rice. Ameku said you can “double” your bowl if you have the appetite, and extra yen.

“We have single size for female customer and double size for men,” said Ameku. “You can eat here, but we also welcome folks to order it to go.

“The taco rice has a little chili kick to it, but it is just enough kick to taste better,” said Ameku, adding that they plan on adding more types of taco rice to the menu.

The menu itself is small, although the restaurant does offer French fries and tacos as side dishes. Ameku was quick to point out that RuLers TACORICE also serves up tasty Acai smoothies, the acai berry is said to help fight the aging process as well as help keep the fat off.

The restaurant is cozy, western-style and can seat about 25 people. Parking is available in the front of the shop.

“Taco rice is something very handy and healthy,” Ameku said. “I hope people from U.S. military bases come and try our special taco rice.”
