About a 5-minute drive from Gate 1 of Kadena Air Base, Breeze Café Sea Glass is a favorite place for many families from the U.S. military community, according to staff leader Yumi Nakamoto.

“60% percent of our customers are foreigners,” said Nakamoto, as she watched families enjoying food and drinks. “Especially after a long commute, many U.S. military wives and kids come to our place.”

Eddie from Kadena Air Base, who came to with his wife and daughter is one such customer.

“I normally eat the chicken quesadilla,” Eddie said. “They’ve got a nice selection of coffee drinks too.”

“We come here every couple of weeks. I love the mood of this place very much. It’s very nice, relaxing and peaceful. And it got a nice view,” added his wife.

The relaxing mood of Sea Glass could explain the popularity, but the chicken I tried made me realize that the quality of food is a major part of the appeal.

“Chicken over rice, a New York Style plate with jerk chicken served with turmeric rice, vegetables and yogurt sauce, is the most popular menu item we have,” Nakamoto said. “In fact, our jerk chicken surprises even customers from New York sometimes because it tastes so good.”

The freshness plays a big role in the taste of the jerk chicken, according to Nakamoto.

“No frozen chicken is used for the food we serve,” Nakamoto said. “To make sure we serve the freshest food, the chicken we serve is directly prepared from live chickens within an hour every day. Plus, we have a recipe of five spices and herbs that go well with the fresh food.”

The jerk chicken has a smooth, soft texture; try it, like I did, with a healthy green banana smoothie - a combo of banana and Japanese mustard spinach.

Sea Glass also serves pancakes and ball donuts a favorite of many Americans. Nakamoto said that some customers come for the donuts when the café opens at 8 a.m.

Breeze Café is all about handpicked healthy food, free from unnecessary additives, and a relaxing atmosphere – something to help refresh yourself.
