USO Service Spotlight: Samantha Wolkoff

by Cindy Kirkman
USO Okinawa

Samantha Wolkoff was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and is the oldest of three. In 2011, Samantha was the first in her family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from Kent State University. She is currently working toward her master’s degree in business administration at UMGC-Asia. Before coming to the USO, Samantha worked for a contract research organization in the pharmaceutical industry in San Diego, California. Samantha and her husband moved to Okinawa in January 2019 and love indulging in the local food and culture.

Fun Questions for Samantha

What’s your favorite spot or activity on Okinawa: Moon Beach Resort.  The beach there is so beautiful, it’s the perfect getaway that’s close to home.

What are your favorite hobbies: traveling, crafting, baking, and playing video games on PS4.

Why do you love working at the USO? Working at the USO is surreal at times because it often doesn’t feel like “work”.  What never gets old is witnessing the pure joy that a free peanut butter and jelly sandwich brings to a young Marine.

What is your favorite memory of working at the USO? One of my favorite memories so far was when my team pulled an all-nighter to support a unit that was about to deploy for Covid-19 relief earlier in the year.  We were there with them all night with smiles, uplifting music, coffee, and snacks to help lift their spirits.

Which program do you want to feature from the USO? Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program.  In December USO Hansen will be providing the opportunity for 10 service members to record themselves reading “The Night Before Christmas” to their children; we will package it up with a copy of the book and the recording and send it to the family back home in time for the holidays.  This program is special because it recognizes the challenges military children face when dealing with separation and helps bring families together no matter the distance that separates them.
