Established in 1899, Shikairo Chinese restaurant is known as the birthplace of “champon.” This Nagasaki delicacy is truly delicious. It consists of fat egg noodles with lots of vegetables, fried pork and seafood in a pork broth.

The main purpose of a trip I made to Tokushima this Golden Week holiday was to visit the Bando POW Camp Site in the Naruto area, which is famous because of a Japanese movie, ‘Bart no Gakuen (literary, Music paradise of bearded men)’.

Although I grew up in Tokushima, I’ve been away from it for almost 20 years and every time I visit the place it’s a treat to taste the food there.
This time, after wandering about at Tokushima Castle Ruins for 3 hours, I went to one of many izakayas in the drinking district in Tokushima and met my old friend.

What do steak lovers, vegetarians and ramen lovers all have in common? They can all eat at Stripe ramen! It’s a new ramen shop on 58 by Lester. When I entered the store, it was clean, bright and had rap/R&B playing on the radio.

On my way home from work almost every day I pass by a building that has a sign out front mostly in kanji, but stating they are a “café.” I have mentioned to my husband several times that we should try it sometime to see what they have, but we never seemed to remember it when we wanted to go out to eat.

No matter how far or near you are from home, and whether traveling for business or pleasure, there are moments when you feel nostalgic for some home cooking. If your comfort food is Chinese cooking, then look no farther than the Shisen-en restaurant in the heart of the Kencho-mae Government District.
