At Kadena Marina, it’s usually a blue sky, an emerald green ocean, or an orange sunset that you can find here. But on April 20, 300 lanterns will be casting their light upon the marina.

The lanterns will be launched at 7:15 p.m. as part of a festival in celebration of Month of the Military Child. The lantern festival is a free event hosted by Kadena High School's Class of 2022, will include water activities, music and a variety of foods.

This is the first festival of its kind in support not only of the military brats at Kadena, but also as a fundraiser for the high school students.

“This is a fundraising event for the class of 2022. We want this to be something beautiful and community-oriented. I hope the weather cooperates. It will be a fun night. There will be music and prom proposals, too,” Debbie Alcazar, a counselor at Kadena High, said.

Lanterns are on sale for $10 now at the school but all are welcome to attend the festival starting at 5 p.m. and observe as the 300 lanterns light up the sky on a memorable night for the community’s military children.
