Motorcycle enthusiasts on Okinawa should get some Grit!

During my teenage years, and into young adulthood, I enjoyed motocross and enduro type racing at the amateur level. As I got older and became a family man, I put motorcycle riding on hold until my children became adults.

I took the MSF course provided by Kadena Air Base last year and decided to get back into riding with a 250cc beginner’s street bike.  I will now be going to test for my upgraded license so that I can ride something a little more my size.  If you are thinking of riding a motorcycle on Okinawa, please give the Motorcycle Safety office a call on Kadena Air Base to make an appointment for their class.  It is required for all SOFA personnel that wish to ride a motorcycle on Okinawa.  They can be reached at 634-2450.

One thing I realized after getting my license was that it wasn’t easy to get information on where to buy bikes off base, what shops were American friendly and how to go about testing bikes to see what I might want to get.  Grit Motorcycle shop in Urasoe City Okinawa on route 58 was just the shop I was looking for.

The Grit Motorcycle shop allows those with the proper licensing to rent bikes in order to give customers a feel for what they might want.  They recently hosted a test drive fun day, where I was able to test drive a higher level motorcycle for free.

Grit welcomes all customers and can show you how to go about getting the bike you desire.  If they don’t have one on hand to sell, they will offer to search for your dream bike.  Not only do they have bikes for sale, they will also keep you safe by continuing to service and repair your ride.

To get there, go south on route 58 from Kadena or Camp Foster.  You will drive through two overpasses and see Grit on the left, before you get to Camp Kinser.  They are open 10:30-19:30 during weekdays, and 11:00 – 18:00 on Sundays.  According to their website, they are closed every 3rd and 5th Sunday of the month.

Their website is in Japanese, but can be found at
