New wharf opens with food, craft, music, fun
Uminchu Wharf, a marine event and restaurant space located in Chatan, officially opens with a celebration Aug. 23-24, just north of American Village, near the Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort.
Commemorating its grand opening, the city of Chatan will be hosting the first ever Okinawa Food and Flea Market. Visitors to the wharf will be treated to amazing food, unique crafts, apparel and live music. Though the Okinawa Food Flea is the first event of its kind, plans are already set to continue the event monthly.
So far, opening day boasts over 13 food booths, including fresh pizza, beer on tap, refreshing cocktails, donuts, ice cream, and local noodles. More than 10 craft booths are set to display their jewelry, candles, clothing, and household goods, and the list of participating vendors continues to grow. Five performance groups will take stage during the event, headlined by local bossa nova artists HacoMaco, while guest DJs will be spinning throughout the day.
The new warf is home to Umihana Seafood Restaurant, serving Chinese and other Asian cuisines. High ceilinged and spacious, the complex is built along a scenic dock and walkway, offering easy access to the water’s edge, adjacent fisherina, and the Hilton.
Diners and visitors are treated to breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding port through the wharf’s large glass-paned walls, a perfect vantage from which to watch breathtaking Okinawa sunsets.
Designed to promote maritime activities within the Chatan area, the wharf also houses an information kiosk and rental car booth. The wharf area is large, with ample parking and open space, including a grass area along the dock, perfect for fitness or leisure activities.
Parking and entrance are free, and the wharf complex offers indoor seating, restroom facilities, and air conditioning on full blast!
While Umihana restaurant is open, the wharf facility hours seem to fluctuate based on the number of visitors.
Opening day events will be held Aug. 23 from 3 p.m. 8 p.m. and Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
