Okinawa’s long summer picks up steam as the drumbeat of Eisa dance reverberates through the island. The season gets even hotter when the dancers get together in Okinawa City.
The Okinawa Zento Eisa Masturi returns Sept. 4, 5, and 6 to the Koza Sports Park Athletic Field.
Meaning “island-wide eisa dance festival,” this huge event has been marking a highlight of Okinawa’s summer, drawing a crowd of 300,000 since its launch in 1956.
On the first day, the festival opens with Michijunee, a parade of Eisa dancers around Gate Street.
On the second and third days, the dancers will gather at the Koza Sports Park Athletic Field to perform various styles of Okinawa’s traditional dances.
This is going to be an opportunity to enjoy the performances and local beer. That’s because on the second and third day of the festival, Orion Beer Fest will also be held in Koza. You will have a chance to drink the fresh local beer while enjoying live entertainment. Since the venue of this beer festival is right next to the festival, you can double your fun at both.
