Pro hoops underway on Okinawa

Okinawa may be lacking a professional baseball team, but that doesn’t mean you can’t catch pro sports on the island. The B. League, Japan’s professional basketball league, tipped off another season Sept. 29, and Okinawa’s very own Ryukyu Golden Kings got in on the action.
Led by returning guard Ryuichi Kishimoto, the Golden Kings have also debuted a new addition in Hilton Armstrong. The 6-foot-11 center, who played last season for the Chiba Jets, spent parts of nine seasons in the NBA and was selected 12th overall out of Connecticut in the 2006 draft.
If you’re looking for some live basketball action, the Okinawa City Gymnasium - the main home stadium for the Kings – is just a five-minute drive from Gate 2 at Kadena Air Base.
The Kings will host their next home game at the Okinawa City Gym on Oct. 14 when the Shiga Lakestars come to town for a 7:05 p.m. tipoff. The two teams will battle it out again the following day at 2:05 p.m.
For more information, and to check game locations, visit the team’s website at Contact MCCS Okinawa or Kadena ITT for tickets.
