There are many great destinations around the world for triathlon races. But, on Okinawa, you won’t have to travel far to get in on the action. Enter the Futenma Triathlon on Oct. 6.

Marine Corps Air Station Futenma (MCAS Futenma) will transform into a staging ground for athletes participating in the three-part race.

A reverse triathlon, the event will have participants competing in an endurance test involving a 5 km-run, 15 km-bike ride, and a 200-meter-swim.

Some areas at MCAS Futenma will be open for the race, Von Brown, an MCCS employee said. “All the courses will be set on the facility. Some will go along the flight line,” he added. Brown said the race usually takes between one to two hours to finish.

The triathlon will start near the Futenma pool with a run through the west side of the facility, followed by the bike race around the flightline and through the east side. According to MCCS, the race is scheduled to start near the swimming pool of the facility. First, the 5k running will take place in the west side of the facility, to be followed by 15k cycling around the flight line and in the east side. Finally, the race will end at the pool with the 200-meter swim.

Athletes of all levels and experience are encouraged to join.

“This will be a good opportunity to come out and have fun competing against each other. Locals will join the race as well. We also see some minors too,” Brown said.  About 150 participants are expected.

Those interested in participating can visit any MCCS facility by 1 p.m. on Sept. 30 or by Oct. 4 at Futenma Semper Fit Gym or through Eventbrite.
