The slowdown of Okinawa summer means the running season is only heating up on the island. Athletes from all over Japan are once again gearing up for two of the hottest competitions of the season: the Okinawa Marathon on Feb. 16, 2020, and the Ayahashi Road Race slated for early April 2020.

First up, the Okinawa Marathon, which features a full and 10k course, garners more than 10,000 runners every year and is known as a tough one to finish. Although the first 10 km will be on a flat coastal road, the rest will pose challenges as it traverses challenging inclines and declines. Part of this marathon also runs through Kadena Air Base via Gate 2 for 2.8 km and out through Gate 5.

Registration for this race is already open and will close either on Dec. 9 or once it reaches 13,500 registrations for the full marathon and 3,000 for the 10K.

Just as the signups for the marathon begin to close up, Ayahashi On-the-Sea Road Race will begin to open the registration for its half marathon, 10 km, and 3.8 km courses some time in December. This race course is on the Kaichu Doro Causeway taking participants over the Hamahiga Bridge on the eastside of the island for an exhilarating experience.

If you’re ready to get active and show off your strong stride, don’t forget to register for one or both of these marathons. Another great opportunity to explore the island and get those steps in!
