Many drivers in Okinawa have probably noticed that, since January, traffic has significantly increased on the Okinawa Expressway between Ishikawa Interchange near Camp Courtney and Kin Interchange near Camp Hansen.

Traffic congestion is apparent on the northbound lanes during the morning commute and southbound during the post-work commute.

According to the West Nippon Expressway Company (NEXCO-West), however, this congestion is due to construction work in progress for an elevated bridge in that section. It’s been 51 years since the road was constructed in 1975, and maintenance and repair are needed for the aging infrastructure.

Construction is expected to end mid-April, NEXCO-West said. Drivers are urged to take precautions and plan ahead to keep other drivers and construction workers safe while traveling in the area.
