Usually when the holidays come around, many of us who live on the island are inclined to head north where many beautiful beaches and mountains await. However, the southern part of Okinawa also offers plenty of lovely landscapes and an intriguing historical background worth getting to know.

Many locations here are related to the area’s ancient history through modern World War II history. Visits to make on the southern coast include Giza Banta, the Peace Memorial Park, Odohama Kaigan (Odo Beach), Manjiro Nakahama’s statue, the Buckner Memorial and Gushikawa Castle Ruins.

Take the route less traveled and learn a little more about the island with a trip to the southern coast.
