In Japan, we celebrate Children's Day (May 5) by hanging up carp streamers called "Koinobori" to wish for the health and happiness of our children.

According to an Chinese ancient legend, carp become dragons after climbing upstream against the rapid current. The Japanese tradition uses the carp streamers as a symbol of the legend.  You may see banners hanging outside many homes during this time to celebrate the family’s youngest members.

Let’s practice the phrase used during this holiday below.

Today’s Japanese phrase is: “Sukusuku sodatte kudasai” = I wish you health and happiness in growing up!
("sukusuku" = quickly and healthily, "sodatte" = grow up, "kudasai" = please, I pray for )

Stay safe and have a happy Children's Day!
Be sure to practice social distancing when you go out to check out Koinobori carp streamer at any tourist attraction.
