KADENA AIR BASE, Japan – Power outages are no fun, but unplanned power outages are worse. That’s why the 718th Civil Engineer Squadron has planned for a series of scheduled power outages to take place around Kadena from January 28 to July 22.

The purpose of the outages is to implement a new microgrid and switchgear system for increased power resiliency. The microgrid will supply the base with diverse power, such as solar power, and generators in addition to the pre-existing Okinawa Electric Power Company’s system. The switchgear system will allow power to be directed to key areas when needed. The irony has not gone unnoticed.

The base has been divided into two zones and one subsection for these outages, and all on-base personnel will be affected. To find out when your building will be affected, visit the Energy Division sharepoint and pay close attention to the signs posted around base. All outages are scheduled for Saturdays, with the possible backup day being the following Sunday. Prepare for power to be out for 12 hours, from 0600 to 1800.

Keeping electronics unplugged is always a smart idea, but will be imperative to prevent a power surge. Everyone is advised to keep all doors and windows closed, keep perishables cool and flashlights handy.
