On Okinawa, people used to drive on the right side of the road like in the U.S. In 1945, traffic rules on the islands followed those of the U.S. Likewise, steering wheels were installed on the left side of cars. The rules were changed to follow Japanese traffic laws in 1978, six years after Okinawa’s reversion to Japan.
