Japan itself may be an island but did you know that the country is made up of nearly 6,900 islands? Besides the mainland, Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku and Okinawa make up the other of the five main islands. Of all the remote islands in the archipelago, 421 are reportedly inhabited.
