It was reported in 2016 that there were 420,000 Okinawans or Okinawan descendents living around the world. The Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival has been held six times since 1990 to commemorate the wide network of Okinawans around the globe. During the closing ceremony of its sixth installment, former Governor Onaga declared that October 30 is the World Uchinanchu Day.
