The Naha Tug-of-War, one of Okinawa’s prized events is scheduled to finally make it’s comeback in October, officials announced this week. Preparations are underway for the event to return Oct.9, Naha City Mayor Mikiko Shiroma and Morimasa Goya, chairman of the Naha Giant Tug-of-War Preservation Society, said at a press conference.
This will be the first time Naha holds the Guinness-certified event in two years due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The details and prevention measures to ensure a safe event are still ongoing, the officials added, including the possibility of postponing if necessary.
Locals and visitors alike have been awaiting the return of the Naha Tug-of-War as it is recognized as one of the three major events of Naha City along with Naha Dragon Boat Race and Shurijo Castle Festival. In previous years, the tug-of-war draws a crowd of 270,000 or more. Locals, tourists, and US service members and their families cheer on participants or join in on the fun and get their hands on the giant rope, which measures 656 feet and 40 tons.
If the event takes place as scheduled, this will mark mark its 52nd installment.
