(Futenma Yukata/Kimono Tour)

Have you ever worn a Yukata? Come Saturday, Oct. 26, there will be a tour near Camp Foster and MCAS Futenma where you can don this traditional Japanese attire and pose like Roronoa Zoro from ONE PIECE or Hinata Hyuga from NARUTO.

Yukata is now generally considered a kind of kimono, but it has its own unique features and background.

First, Yukata is casual wear which is normally worn during the summertime as opposed to Kimono, which is geared for more formal occasions. Many young Japanese wear it when they go see fireworks.

There are also some differences in their fabrics as well. While yukata has thin cotton fabric, Kimono is woven thick with silk, wool and cotton.

According to Nihon Yukata Bunka Kyokai (Japanese yukata culture society), yukata’s origin can be traced back to Yukatabira, a type of garment that people used to wear in saunas during the Heian era (794-1185). It was during the Edo era (1600 – 1868) that it became a popular attire for bon odori festivals and hanami (flower viewing).

Priced at 30,000 yen (approx. $200), this is not an inexpensive tour. However, the fee includes a photo session at Futenma Shrine with a professional photographer, rental fees for Yukata, a walking tour with an English guide, and lunch in the neighborhood.

Strolling in Yukata is a popular activity for tourists on mainland Japan. The tour on Oct 26 will be a good opportunity to enjoy it on this subtropical island, where the summer mood is still lingering.
