One of Okinawa’s biggest pottery markets is back this weekend in Yomitan.
On Feb. 24 and 25, shoppers can peruse Yachimun pottery pieces at the Yomitan Pottery Festival’s 31st installment.
The festival will run at the Yomitan Farmers’ Market Yunta Ichiba from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and feature collections of local pottery artisans selling their wares.
Yachimun pottery originated on Okinawa more than 400 years ago to the Ryukyu Kingdom. The unique and colorful designs are a product of the kingdom’s cultural exchange with Southeast Asia, China, and Japan.
Tsuboya District of the current Naha City used to be a mecca of “Yachimun” since the kingdom had aggregated manufacturers to the area in 1682. Yomitan Village became another production site after Jiro Kinjo, a legendary craftsman moved his studio to the host municipality of Torii Station in 1972.
Don’t miss the festival and enjoy one of Okinawa’s local, beloved crafts this weekend!
