Tidelands are pieces of coastal land or islands that flood during the high tide and appear for a short window at different points of the day. There aren’t many tidelands on Okinawa, but near Camp Hansen and Camp Schwab, the Katabaru Tideland stretches across up to two kilometers during the low tide.
The tideland is in Ginozan Village and is visible from the seawall. From the seawall, visitors can get a view of the tideland’s reddish sands as they spread out across the area adding to the beautiful views of the ocean.
During my visit, there were many small crabs scattering across the sandy surface. They were quick and reacted quickly as I approached.
This is a beautiful stop to make on a daytrip and offers a look at the bottom of the ocean when the tide is low.
