Join us as we take a short virtual journey to Yonaguni Island.
From mainland Japan, it takes two flights go get to this remote island. First, one to Naha and then hop onto one direct to Yonaguni from there. You can also take a flight or ferry from Ishigaki Island.
Known as the western-most island of Japan, Yonaguni Island has plenty of nature, culture, activities, and food for those looking for a vacation long away from home.
Some of the must-see spots in Yonaguni Island include:
Agarizai – This cape on the eastern end of the island sits on a cliff 100 meters above the surface of the water. Say hi to Yonaguni Uma, the island’s indigenous horses, which graze in the meadow around the cape.
Rokujo Beach – Known for its crystal waters, this beach is small as its name “rokujo” (meaning six tatami mats) suggests. Don’t let the size discourage you from visiting, this place is secluded and will give you the feeling of being on your own private beach.
Tategami-iwa – This 30-meter monolith stands along the rocky southeast coast. Thought to be the symbol of Yonaguni, this adds an interesting layer to the landscape when viewed from the two observatories nearby.
Last, but not least, Tinda-bana or Tinda-hanata is a destination you won’t want to miss. This natural observation deck made of stone rising to 85 meters and overlooking a portion of the island. Get in a nice walk and check out the great view this vantage point provides.
While touring Yonaguni Island, make sure you try some Yashigani or coconut crab. The delicate white and yellow meat is surprisingly tender and savory.
