Yanai City is a beautiful city filled with historical merchant houses and architecture that are well-preserved in the white-walled street. You’ll find this charming place only a short 45-minute drive from MCAS Iwakuni. While walking through the district, you’ll notice many cartoonish cute goldfish lanterns hanging from the eaves of the buildings. Countless of goldfish-shaped reddish paper lanterns make a great contrast against the traditional white-walled street and look very cute!
Today's Japanese phrase:
“Kawairashii desu!” 可愛らしいです! = How cute!
("kawairashii" 可愛らしい = very cute, ".. desu" ・・です = It is...)
The City is going to host Kingyo Chochin Matsuri, or goldish lantern festival to light up the streets of the town with close to 30 giant goldfish lantern floats parading and over 4,000 goldfish lanterns hanging from eaves on August 13. So, check it out if you are around the city!
