FOLSOM, Calif., (April 20, 2025) — Military families face extraordinary challenges—frequent relocations, deployments, and long periods of separation. For service members who are also parents, these challenges can be magnified by complex custody agreements and co-parenting responsibilities. In recognition of April as the Month of the Military Child, family law attorney Tiffany L. Andrews is sharing important insights to help military families successfully navigate custody and co-parenting situations.

“Military parents often feel like the system doesn’t understand their unique circumstances,” says Andrews, a Certified Family Law Specialist serving Northern California. “My goal is to empower them with the tools, legal knowledge, and confidence to make decisions that protect their children and respect their service.”

Through her Talk to Tiffany approach, Andrews has worked with many active-duty service members, veterans, and their spouses to create parenting plans that honor both their military commitments and parental rights.

Custody and Co-Parenting Challenges Unique to Military Families

- Frequent Moves and Reassignments

Military families are often relocated, which can disrupt custody schedules. “It’s critical to have a parenting plan that anticipates the possibility of relocation,” Andrews explains. “This might include virtual visitation, scheduled travel, or alternate custody arrangements during leave.”

- Deployments and Long-Term Absences

Deployments can create gaps in physical custody, but they don’t diminish a parent’s role. “We work with families to build in flexible communication plans during deployments,” she says, “ensuring the parent-child bond remains strong, even across long distances.”

- Jurisdictional Complications

Military families may live in one state, be stationed in another, and maintain legal residence in yet another. “Understanding which court has jurisdiction is vital,” Andrews advises. “We guide clients through the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act (UCCJEA) to determine where to file and how to enforce custody rights across state lines.”

Tips for Military Parents Navigating Custody

- Create a Deployment-Ready Parenting Plan

Parenting plans for military families should be proactive and flexible, accounting for changing duty stations or deployments. “Make sure your plan includes contingencies for distance, virtual contact, and alternative schedules,” Andrews says.

- Prioritize Communication with Co-Parents

“Even in high-conflict cases, keeping communication respectful and child-centered is key,” Andrews emphasizes. Using co-parenting apps like OurFamilyWizard or TalkingParents, or scheduled updates can help both parents stay informed and engaged.

- Know Your Legal Rights Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA)

Military parents have protections under federal law. “The SCRA allows for delays in legal proceedings during active duty,” Andrews notes. “It’s essential that military parents know and exercise these rights.”

Advocating for Military Families Year-Round

As part of her commitment to empowering parents through family law, Andrews honors the resilience of military families—especially children who navigate long separations with courage. “The Month of the Military Child is a powerful reminder that behind every service member is a family making daily sacrifices,” she says. “Through thoughtful custody planning and legal support, we can help ensure those children are cared for, supported, and emotionally secure.”
