Awamori liquor is the oldest spirit in the country whose history goes back to 1470. Thought to have originated from a spirit in Thailand, the local liquor has evolved, and at one point became a liquor specifically for royal families. Commodore Perry had a chance to taste the local spirit when he visited Okinawa in the 19th century.
